What is vehicle-to-home (V2H) or bidirectional charging and how is it a benefit?

Vehicle-to-home (V2H) or bidirectional charging enables energy to flow in two directions. Not only does it send energy from your home to your EV for charging (unidirectional)—it also enables you to send energy from your V2H-capable GM EV* back to your home when the grid is down (bidirectional), providing you with a brilliant new source of backup power.

Can the GM Energy PowerShift Charger provide backup power to my home?

The GM Energy PowerShift Charger becomes bidirectional when paired with the GM Energy V2H Enablement Kit. This means you can send energy from your V2H-capable GM EV to provide power to your properly equipped home during a blackout.*

Can the GM PowerUp 2 Charger provide backup power to my home?

No, the GM PowerUp 2 Charger is unidirectional. This means the GM PowerUp 2 Charger only allows energy to flow in one direction—from your home to your EV for charging sessions. It can’t send energy from your EV back to your home.

Can the GM PowerUp 2 Charger be used with a non-GM electric vehicle?

Yes, the GM PowerUp 2 Charger can charge non-GM electric vehicles. It is compatible with any EV that has an SAE J1772 charge port. Check your vehicle Owner’s Manual for specifications.

Can the GM Energy PowerShift Charger be used with a non-GM electric vehicle?

Yes, the GM Energy PowerShift Charger can be used as a unidirectional charger for non-GM electric vehicles. It is compatible with any EV that has an SAE J1772 charge port. Check your vehicle Owner’s Manual for specifications.

 

Note: Non-GM EVs will not provide backup power utilizing the GM Energy PowerShift Charger. Only V2H-capable GM EVs listed here can provide backup power when the GM Energy PowerShift Charger is paired with the GM Energy V2H Enablement Kit.

How do I know which GM EVs can provide backup power to my home?

V2H capability will vary by vehicle and is dependent on factors such as hardware specifications, operating system versions, and software updates. Select GM EVs are V2H capable (anticipated V2H-capable vehicles listed here) and some eligible 24MY EVs require a dealership or over-the-air update to enable bidirectional charging.

 

Note: The GM Energy PowerShift Charger and GM Energy V2H Enablement Kit are required to unlock the bidirectional charging that lets you use your V2H-capable GM EV as a source of backup power.
