Powering Up in a Cold Snap or Heat Wave

Whatever the weather, your GM EV can keep you going with proper charging and battery care. In a cold climate? Give yourself extra time to charge and make sure the charger and charge port are clear of ice and snow. Facing summer heat? Charge in a garage or in shade to keep your car cool and preserve range. And while your GM EV battery can be sensitive to temperature changes, when plugged in it can draw power to maintain the right conditions inside the battery to help preserve battery health and maximize charging performance.

Take control of your EV's range and get the most out of every charge.

When planning your next EVenture, keep these 4T’s of EV road-tripping in mind to help keep you rolling.

Temperature

Conquer any climate in your GM EV with our expert-approved tips to maximize range all year round.

  • If extreme weather is coming your way, charge to 100% as part of your emergency prep and keep your GM EV charged at higher levels throughout these conditions so you’re ready to go.

  • During freezing temps and summer scorchers, plug in your GM EV to preserve range while heating up or cooling down the cabin before you hit the road. This is called Cabin Preconditioning and can be initiated with the Climate control or from your GM vehicle mobile app.*

  • Using your steering wheel and seat controls to heat or cool your personal space instead of the entire vehicle can preserve a significant amount of battery energy.

  • Remember to precondition your battery prior to DC Fast charging, as this will heat or cool the battery to its ideal temperature in preparation for fastest DC Fast charging. In the vehicle, you may see this referred to as Fast Charge Prep. If a DCFC station is selected as the destination in the GM vehicle mobile app* or through the infotainment screen, the vehicle can automatically start its Fast Charge Prep to get to the ideal battery temperature when the station is reached.

  • Plan where you park. In hot summers, opt for a parking garage or shaded area to help regulate battery temperature. Frigid temps primarily impact how much energy it takes to power up your GM EV and keep it running, so a warm garage or covered area away from the elements is ideal.
Terrain
Car driving through dirt

Terrain

Location, location, location. Learn to maneuver over hills and through headwinds by using your in-vehicle navigation to plan your route and optimize range.

  • While GM EVs perform on all terrain, encountering rolling hills and headwinds can make a difference. Prepare for unexpected conditions by giving your battery a little extra charge and start your drive with properly inflated tires.

  • Research the terrain and weather conditions you’ll be traveling through; map out charging stops just in case your range is impacted more than expected. Using Google Built-in* within the vehicle's display can help to predict range, taking account for elevation change, weather impacts, and the state of charge upon arrival so you can drive with confidence.

  • Driving on flat terrain and know you’ll stay at a steady speed? Turn on Super Cruise.*

  • Use One Pedal Drive and the Regen On Demand to recover energy during downhill portions of a drive and when braking.
Technique

Driving Technique

Your driving style directly influences your GM EV’s range. The trick to getting more from your GM EV is in refining your driving technique.

  • Rethink your need for speed and keep an eye on your speedometer if you need to maximize range because GM EVs are most efficient when driving the posted speed limits.

  • Maintain a steady pace, as rapid starts and sudden stops can influence your GM EV’s range. Opt for an even-footed approach by turning on One Pedal Drive and using Regen On Demand.

  • Turn on cruise control to maintain a constant, steady speed and stay aware of traffic flow to minimize hard braking.

  • Stay aired up! Properly inflated tires reduce resistance and can help make the most out of your GM EV’s range.
Towing
Car towing boat

Towing

If you want to use your tow-approved GM EV* to haul a boat, RV or other road-trip toys, charging with a trailer in tow is doable with a little extra planning.

  • In towing, be empowered knowing that you may need to start your drive with a full charge or plan for an extra stop to charge up to account for the extra weight.

  • GM EVs equipped with trailering modes will update their EV range once connected to what you're towing, or upon activation of Tow Haul Mode. Additionally, if equipped, creating a trailer profile for each trailer that you plan to attach to the vehicle will also store the settings associated with that trailer and provide better future predictions of range.

  • Look for charging stations with pull-through spaces that you can drive your entire vehicle through, like the GM Energy Pilot Flying J stations. Or, you can explore pulling in behind a charger or park at an angle. If the charger isn’t long enough to reach your EV without the trailer sticking out into the road, get creative with how you
access it.

  • Be mindful of charging etiquette and make sure others can still access any open chargers. You may need to drop your trailer at the edge of the parking lot where it’s out of the way while you power up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I be confident I'll reach my destination with my current state of charge?

Your in-vehicle navigation system and GM vehicle mobile app* provide real-time range calculations based on current battery level, driving conditions, and your planned route. Before departure, check your estimated arrival battery percentage and input your destination into your app or navigation to plan charging stops if needed.

What factors affect my EV's driving range?

Several variables impact your range including weather conditions, driving speed, terrain, use of climate control, and driving technique.

I need to plan a long drive or road trip – how can I do that?

Planning a road trip with your GM EV is easy using your GM vehicle mobile app.* You can map your route, find public charging stations along the way, and plan your charging stops around specific restaurants or attractions. Before you take off, make sure your GM vehicle mobile app* is set up and bring your NACS DC adapter to be able to use Tesla Superchargers.* At each stop, just plug in, start charging—then get back on the road with confidence.

How does weather and temperature affect my EV charging?

Both extreme cold and extreme heat can affect your EV’s ability to charge and your range. In both conditions, prioritize charging in a covered location to minimize exposure to the elements. On the go, this means looking for public charging stations with canopies you can pull under or through. Prepare your EV for a charge by preconditioning your battery, either by starting your charge from your GM vehicle mobile app* or manually through the in-vehicle navigation.

What should I do if my EV battery runs completely out of charge?

Immediately contact GM EV Concierge at (833) 64POWER or, if you have OnStar, contact an agent with a blue button push or through the OnStar app. Lastly, consider carrying a GM Dual Level Charge Cord for emergency situations. Prior to running out of charge, your GM EV will provide a low battery warning through the in-vehicle navigation. And, if you are using the route planner, you will get an alert on when to stop for a charge.

Will the NACS DC adapter work with Level 2 Tesla chargers?

No. The NACS DC adapter is designed exclusively for safe use with Tesla Superchargers* and NACS DC fast charging stations. With the use of the NACS DC adapter, GM EV drivers have access to V3 Tesla Superchargers and additional chargers in the network. Select Tesla Superchargers are available to Tesla drivers only. Customers are able to use their GM vehicle mobile app* to locate specific chargers. Review this guide to learn more.
