What is vehicle-to-home (V2H) or bidirectional charging and how is it a benefit?

Vehicle-to-home (V2H) or bidirectional charging enables energy to flow in two directions. Not only does it send energy from your home to your EV for charging (unidirectional)—it also enables you to send energy from your V2H-capable GM EV* back to your home when the grid is down (bidirectional), providing you with a brilliant new source of backup power.

How long will my home have backup power?

The GM Energy mobile tools available through your GM vehicle mobile app* can help estimate the backup time you have available from your GM Energy ecosystem in real-time using your V2H-capable GM EV* and/or GM Energy PowerBank charge level and your average home consumption. 

 

GM Energy products that include the GM Energy PowerBank, such as the GM Energy Home System and GM Energy Storage Bundle, can provide the following estimated backup times running an average American home*: 

 

  • GM Energy PowerBank 10.6kWh – up to 6 hours

 

  • GM Energy PowerBank 17.7kWh – up to 10 hours

 

  • GM Energy PowerBank 35.4kWh – up to 20 hours

 

For GM Energy vehicle-to-home (V2H) products that don’t include the GM Energy PowerBank, such as the GM Energy V2H Bundle, the backup time will depend on the specific model of your V2H-capable GM EV* and your vehicle's state of charge. 

 

Please Note: for all GM Energy V2H and energy storage products, backup time will depend on various factors, including the loads you choose to back up, energy used during a power outage, and the V2H-capable GM EV* and/or GM Energy PowerBank battery health over time. 

 

What items in my home can I run with backup power?

Every customer has the flexibility to choose which loads are most critical to back up. During a power outage, the GM Energy V2H Bundle can discharge up to 9.6kW of power* from your V2H-capable GM EV* to your properly equipped home*, which is sufficient wattage to run many common home appliances.

 

For energy storage products that include the GM Energy PowerBank, such as the GM Energy Home System and GM Energy Storage Bundle, see the chart below for discharge capabilities during an outage and while on the grid for each GM Energy PowerBank storage capacity,
